![]() In 1979 Sportoletti decided to start producing fine wines of high quality, with the philosophy of respecting the characteristics typical of the hilly area of central Umbria. Average.Sportoletti is a family owned agricultural business which for several generations has relied primarily on revenue from farming. Bread dough, strawberry, lime and sweet in the finish. Having the 2002 Taittinger CdC on the table probably wasn’t a fair association but it’s worth mentioning that I tasted these two bubblies quite far apart in time, with the SS going later in the dinner. 2011 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Sea Spray - USA, California, Central Coast, Sta.Have to focus on the wine over multiple days the next time I drink it. Nothing to retry today as I took the bottle to a table where it joined another 8-10 others, mainly Cab. Some graphite on the nose this time and overall, very good. ![]() This showed tart and lithe when first opened, then fattened up some as it aired and hit room temp. 2011 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Campbell Ranch Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast ().Not sure whether this was vintage, off bottle or something else but it left me scratching my head a bit. Seemed to lack acid and was just jammy and pudgy. However, last night, this came off as lacking complexity. I have liked this wine many times in the past, the biggest wine Jim makes from his profile of estate fruit. 2009 Jemrose Gloria’s Gem - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley ().I didn’t care for this, as it smelled over ripe to me. 2008 Sportoletti Rosso Villa Fidelia Umbria IGT - Italy, Umbria, Umbria IGT ().I did not smell or taste any heat in this wine, yet I can feel the power of the mountain fruit and style at play. What I dug was the fruit’s depth, a really deep wine with lots of oomph. Dark fruit, iron and a bit of cologne-like oak on the nose. 2006 O’Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain - USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain ().It did richen with air, as it was not decanted but even in that richness, it pulled it off and I would offer this wine should age fairly well given the balance that remains here at almost year 10. The fruit is a mix of red and black and it succeeds by having acid, the shading of the currant-like fruit helping to balance the darker aspects. It does show some ripeness, and some oak in the mocha note that sits in the aromatic. Liked this cab, best on the table last night. 2005 Hourglass Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley ().Finishes with iron and what I called a ‘berry syrup’ so just be aware that the vintage does show in this bottle. The vintage, hot as it was, gets reflected in the fruit here, as it shows a warm blackberry, smoky cherry and dark chocolate note. One person said they thought the aromatic was off but I thought it was fine. 2004 Revana Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley, St.The aromatics said Rhone to me, with black cherry, dried cherry and a medium balanced frame. 2004 Alain Voge Cornas Vieilles Vignes - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas ()Įnjoyed this. There was a candied lemon peel quality, along with a baked apple, then a mix of lime acidity and some bread dough. 2002 Taittinger Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne - France, Champagne ().I’d not tpyically think of Ridge wines in this expression but this bottle was not great and I had one taste and dumped out the rest. Where it went off the rails for me is that I believe it is too ripe, which lended a nail polish aromatic to the nose and an over-ripe fruit expression on the palate, jammy. I believe I was the outlier last night, as I didn’t care for this, yet others seemed to like it. 1995 Ridge Lytton Springs - USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley ().Good weight, doesn’t seem to be drying out at all. Has a bell pepper and spice box aromatic, with a nice, fresh fruit profile, one that seems to be aging slowly and quite well. Had a $29.99 old school price tag on the bottle’s neck, which I thought was a cool reminder of things past. 1991 Kistler Cabernet Sauvignon Kistler Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley ()ĭidn’t know Kistler made cab. Thanks to the 7 of you who made it down, had a blast. I really enjoy these kinds of evenings as it’s never known what bottles will get tasted and I learn something new each time. The theme was bring something that “wows” you, and with that guidance the following bottles appeared. Nice to meet Joel W finally, as well as catch up with Paul Lin and get to know Andre M better. 8 guys got together to bring bottles to the table, share a meal Omakase style and have some good conersation. Fun night yesterday at Playground here in the OC.
